laundry. If this piques your curiosity, read on, to learn more about
what these great little berries can do for you and our earth."
A Berry Cleans My Laundry?
"Yes! Soapberries clean your laundry. In fact, soapberries have
been a part of the ayurvedic tradition for over a thousand years.
These berries, also called soapnuts, contain saponin which is a natural
surfactant. Surfactants are the ingredient in soap that separates the
dirt, oils, and the like from your clothes. So, because these berries
have saponin in them, when you put them in your washer with your
clothes, they get the job done. Simple and effective. As these are
only berries, there are no chemicals going into your clothes or your
grey water. Soapberries are also reported to have an anti-microbial
effect, which means it is actually a benefit to your septic tank."
Soapberry Soapnut FAQs
- I've heard of Soapnuts, are Soapberries the same thing?
Yes,
soapberries and soapnuts are interchangeable. We prefer to refer these
wonderful berries as soapberries, as they are not actually a nut. - How do I know when I need to replace a soapberry?
The
soapberry disintegrates and becomes paper like as the saponin is
released into your wash water. As the saponin is released, the fiber
of the soapberry is left behind in your muslin bag. It is these pieces
that no longer contain saponin that you want to remove. These pieces
of soapberry are completely compostable. - Can I use bleach with soapberries?
Yes. The use of oxygen bleach will not interfere with the release of saponin into your wash water. - Do I need to use anything else for stain removal?
You should pre-treat any stains as you would have when using standard laundry detergent. - Where do SoBerry Clean’s soapberries come from? These soapberries are purchased in bulk from India. We here at SoBerry Clean sort and package our soapberries for you.
- Can I use fabric softener?Yes. Although, soapberries act as a natural fabric softener, making it unnecessary to use fabric softener.
- Can you use soapberries in a front load washing machine?Absolutely. In fact, that is the exact type of washing machine we use our soapberries in.
- Do I need to remove the soapberries for the rinse cycle?
No, it is not necessary to remove your soapberries for the rinse cycle.
- How do they do on Cloth Diapers?
My Mamma's Milk loves Rockn' Green (which we also sell) when it comes to diapers. HOWEVER, pre-soaking diapers in Rocking Green and warm water and THEN washing them on hot with just the Soapberries works very well! Using this technique works fabulous for the highly sensitive baby. We do use Soapberries all the time for our kids clothes and our own!
