Class 1: Let's Talk Birth (April 27th, 2011)
Instructor Erin Monast
“As we trust the flowers to open to new life, so can we trust
birth" ~
Harriette Hartigan
The pregnant body is like a highly evolved instrument, which
requires meticulous maintenance for an easier, healthier pregnancy and
birthing. We will discuss
nutrition and smart positions for pregnancy because; by eating properly and
avoiding compromising positions you will decrease the need for interventions both during pregnancy and
birth. We will discuss where the myth of pain being something all women must
endure during childbirth came from.
My hopes is to eliminate any fear you may have surrounding your upcoming
birth so you can have a positive experience for both you and your baby. Also
your choices for pregnancy, birthing, and the newborn will be covered. This is an interactive class so please dress
comfortably and bring your pillows.
Your partner and/or birth companion should attend. Please feel free to bring beverages and
snacks.
Class 2: The Breastfeeding Life (May 4th, 2011)
Instructor: Kate Conway
"A
newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother,
food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence.
Breastfeeding satisfies all three." ~
Grantly Dick-Read
This class
will cover the art of breastfeeding and the lifestyle it so often entails. We
will cover a bit of history on why breastfeeding (the human evolutionary norm),
fell out of style in the USA. We will cover the tips and techniques learned
from decades of mother-to-mother nursing experiences and the myths that can get
you into trouble. We will learn lifestyle choices that help us be comfortable
and happy nursing moms. We will learn how dad can play a critical role in
supporting the breastfeeding mom and a special daddy-bond with their baby. We
will get to understand how each of us is unique in our body-types and how to
use these aspects of our bodies to our advantage when we nurse. Lots of participation!
Lots of informative fun! This class is not your typical boobie class!
Class 3: Instinctive Parenting (May 11th, 2011)
Instructor: Kate Conway
"Parents
should recognize that having their babies cry unnecessarily harms the baby
permanently. It changes the nervous system so they're sensitive to future
trauma." - Dr. Michael Commons, Dept of
Psychiatry, Harvard
In the United
States, the simple act of allowing our natural instincts to guide us as
parents has been thwarted by countless streams of misinformation. We are told
that allowing a child to "cry it out" is the only way they will learn
independence. We are told that co-sleeping is dangerous and that wearing your
child will spoil them. These and so many other dangerous myths ignore one
critical fact: the human race exists because we did breastfeed, co-sleep, wear
our children and respond to their cries. This class will focus on the values
embedded in Attachment Parenting theory. We will show you how to correctly wear
your child, co-sleep safely and understand how critical it is to respond to a
child's cries. You will learn soothing techniques, ways to unwind as a parent,
and an understanding of the simple, age appropriate needs of a child. Parents
will get to see how to set up a co-sleeping bed, try out a variety of
babywearing devices and even get a look at cloth diapers. Lots of
participation! Lots of informative fun! This class goes hand in hand with our
"Breastfeeding Life" class.
